Statement: Nuclear Energy for Texans Applauds Exelon Generation for Submitting New Nuclear Plant Application

AUSTIN, Texas—Nuclear Energy for Texans (NET) applauds Exelon Generation for filing today its first new nuclear plant application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a site in Victoria County, Texas.

Texas is expecting a surge in electricity demand over the next 20 years as the population continues to expand. Independent studies show that the need for power in the state is expected to grow 48 percent by 2030. NET believes nuclear energy must be a part of our state’s energy mix as we move into the 21st century.

The site selected by Exelon Nuclear for possible construction of a new nuclear plant will ensure stability for not only Victoria’s economy, but Texas’ as well, beyond today’s high oil and gas prices. The proposed dual unit plant would produce 3,000 megawatts—enough to power more than 1.85 million average Texas homes.

Construction alone could, at peak, employ an estimated 6,300 workers. Afterward, the plant would provide approximately 800 permanent employees with significantly higher salaries that the current median income in the Victoria area.

NET commends Exelon Generation for its vision and commitment to expanding Texas’ energy portfolio through safe, clean and reliable nuclear energy.
