Statement: Nuclear Energy for Texans Applauds Gov. Perry’s Call for Increased Nuclear Generation in Texas

AUSTIN – Nuclear Energy for Texans (NET) today applauded Gov. Rick Perry’s call for increased nuclear generation in Texas. In his State-of-the-State address to a joint session of the Texas Legislature Gov. Perry said that Texas should support and encourage increased nuclear production.

“NET is very encouraged by the tremendous support Gov. Perry has shown for nuclear energy during his administration,” said Tom Forbes, NET President. “Texans recognize the need for an increased and diverse energy portfolio to meet our states future energy needs and NET appreciates Gov. Perry supporting expansion of nuclear power as a means to reach that important goal.”

Texas is expecting a tremendous increase in electricity demand over the next 20 years as the population continues to expand. Independent studies show that the need for power in the state is expected to grow 48 percent by 2030. Nuclear energy is the only proven base-load energy source that can safely and reliably produce tremendous amounts of electricity without emitting harmful greenhouse gases.
