Statement

Nuclear Energy for Texans (NET), a statewide coalition dedicated to educating Texans about the benefits of nuclear energy, supports the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s decision to accept for review the license application submitted by the Department of Energy for the long-planned geological repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The repository would be used for storing spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. This evaluation process marks an historic step for proponents of nuclear energy, and could mean a more permanent method of disposing of radioactive byproducts, such as used fuel and other waste. The Federal government has the legal obligation to accept used nuclear fuel for reprocessing or disposal. The progress in the licensing process illustrates the fact that our nation is ready to safely manage used nuclear fuel.
